Zimbabwe's demand for feed corn expected to climb - GAIN
Feed corn needed for cattle, poultry productionDemand for feed corn in Zimbabwe is expected to grow to 350,000 MT in 2024-2025, according to a recent US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Global Agricultural Information Network (GAIN) report.
Supplementary feeding will be required to maintain the national cattle herd at a fair condition as grazing will be limited until the start of the next rainy season (October 2024).
Growth in broiler production is also expected to continue. According to Zimbabwe’s Department of Agriculture, broiler meat production grew by 9% in 2023 to 210,000 MT.
Chicken meat is ubiquitous and relatively affordable compared to other meats and serves as an important protein source in the diet of many Zimbabweans. In fact, chicken meat contributes more than 60% of meat requirements in Zimbabwe. Thus, Zimbabwe’s total domestic demand for corn in MY 2024/25 is estimated at 1.9 MMT a marginal drop from MY 2023/24.
