Walmart Canada has beefed up its commitments to sustainable sourcing and recycling to help make the sustainable choice the affordable choice on our journey to becoming a regenerative company, the company said in a press release.

Walmart Canada has committed to purchasing a total of 2.5 million pounds of beef sourced from certified sustainable Canadian farms and ranches, according to standards set by the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (CRSB). That’s an additional 1 million pounds of beef, adding to the 1.5M pounds we announced in October 2021.

In May 2021, Walmart Canada became the first retailer in Canada to offer an on-pack CRSB Certified claim in a line of beef products. Walmart said 100% of its fresh beef is sourced in Canada.

The trays for Walmart Canada’s ground beef, including the Your Fresh Market burgers are now 100% recyclable and feature a “How2Recycle” label. These standardized labels clearly communicate recycling instructions to consumers. This means over 12 million trays – or about 1M pounds – can avoid landfills each year.

“As we continue on our journey to becoming a regenerative company, we’re always looking for opportunities to provide our customers with options that are better for the planet," said explains Rob Pereira, senior director of meat and seafood at Walmart Canada. "Increasing our commitment to sourcing beef from certified sustainable Canadian farms and ranches along with adopting fully recyclable packaging for our ground beef are changes we’re really proud of."
