Brazil greenlights beef exports to Thailand

26 May 2020

Brazil’s Agriculture Ministry reports that Thailand has agreed to accept Brazilian beef imports.

Reuters reports that the agreement, announced on 25 May, is the second agricultural trade deal the countries have reached in the last two weeks.

The ministry says five meat packing plants in in the states of Para, Rondonia, Goias, Mato Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul have been approved for exports.

The companies who own the plants have not been identified. Nor has the ministry specified when exports will start.

Last week, the ministry announced an agreement for Thailand to take imports of Brazilian dairy products.

Thailand last year imported $90 million of beef, half of it from Australia, which has a trade agreement with the Southeast Asian country, the ministry said.

Brazilian agricultural exports reached a record $10.2 billion in April, it added, 25 percent above the same month last year.
