Bovine Babesiosis Outbreaks Reported in Romania
ROMANIA - Dr Geronimo Raducu Branescu, President Secretary of State Chief Veterinary Officer at the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority has reported four outbreaks of bovine babesiosis, also known as Redwater or Tick Fever, in the city of Cluj.

According to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), the outbreak was initially observed on 11 June and confirmed on the same date after a microscopic examination was conducted at the Veterinary health laboratory in Cluj, where the causal agent was found to be Babesia spp. The OIE received an immediate notification on Tuesday, 7 June.
The OIE reports that a total of 22 animals showed signs of susceptibility, out of which four cases were found. No deaths were reported, and none of the affected animals were killed and disposed of.
Some of the control measures applied by the OIE in conjunction with the country's veterinary authorities include:
- Disinfestation,
- Vector surveillance and
- Treatment of affected animals (Antiparasitic ).
Vaccination has been permitted, that is, if a vaccine for treatment of the disease is found to exist.
The source of the outbreaks remains inconclusive.
