Average weights are at 816 pounds, the USDA reported last week, largely thanks to having more steers in the mix than normal.

This is according to market analysts Steve Meyer and Len Steiner in their daily CME livestock report, which said steers are 1.8 per cent heavier than last year.

However, the weights of other classes have increased even more.

“The main reason why weights are so much heavier is due to an increase in weights for other categories,” said Messrs Meyer and Steiner. “Heifer weights are currently 3.5 per cent higher than last year while cow carcass weights are up 4 per cent.”
