The increase will take meat output to 2.4 million tons on the back of bullish predictions regarding the pork, chicken and beef sectors.

Per capita meat consumption is expected to rise by one kilogram, up to 55.3 kilograms.

Growth has stemmed from a tranche of livestock support programmes that firstly subsidise farmers for expanding livestock production and then reward farmers with a cash payment at slaughter, explained the Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food, Mykola Prysyazhnyuk.

“By the end of the year, meat production in Ukraine will be up 5.8 per cent on 2012 which will be down to government support programmes,” said Mr Prysyazhnyuk.

“We have been able to secure an upward trend in farming and will continue to work on expansion plans.”
