By involving the National Livestock Federation, the Mexican Association of Feedlot Cattle and the National Association of Federally Inspected Establishments, the Commission for Beef Productivity and Competition will improve cattle sector performance, government staff have said.

To begin with, the commission will conduct a farm survey, which according to the Ministry of Agriculture (SAGARPA) will guide future regulatory decisions.

Additional technical assistance will also stem from the newly formed commission, including a crackdown on illegal drugs such as Clenbuterol, a drug for respiratory and blood pressure complications.

Further benefits will include a better traceability system for livestock through more accurate identification.

Farmers will also be able to access help in marketing beef through a plan to develop supplier chains within the sector.

Particular focus is placed on the issue of efficient cattle movement in the country in the light of climate change.

Input costs are linked with climate change and grazing pressure which the commission says is to be tackled through secure supplies of feed and mollasses.
