President Urged to Ban Cattle Slaughter
SRI LANKA - In the wake of a Buddhist monk committing self-immolation to protest slaughtering cattle, coalition partners of Sri Lanka's ruling United People's Freedom Alliance have asked the President to immediately halt the practice.

According to ColomboPage, the Sinhala Buddhist monk party, Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) has asked the President to ban cattle slaughter before the funeral of the Ven. Bowatte Indrarathana Thera, who doused himself with gasoline and self-immolated on the Vesak Poya day (24 May) in Kandy.
The General Secretary of the JHU, Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka addressing media said the monk sacrificed himself for a cause he tirelessly worked for.
Minister Wimal Weerawansa, the leader of the National Freedom Front (NFF) has also asked the President to immediately ban the cattle slaughter, according to local media reports.
He has pointed out that the majority of the island's Buddhists and Hindus do not eat the meat and reject the practice while the cattle is slaughtered for the benefit of a few.
Meanwhile the extremist Buddhist organizations in the country vowed to continue
