Nianija Cattle Stock Routes Inaugurated
GAMBIA - The Regional Project for sustainable Management of Education Ruminant Livestock in West Africa (PROGEBE) inaugurated the cattle stock routes in Nianija District, Central River Region North. PROGEBE also used the occasion to distribute fire-fighting materials to the community.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Alhagie Ganyie Touray, the governor of the region, commended PROGEBE for its laudable efforts in poverty reduction and strengthening food security, reports The Daily Observer.
According to him, the importance of cattle stock routes cannot be over- emphasised as it will help to reduce dispute among cattle owners and the farming community. He also called for active participation of the community as the project is piloted in two districts in the region.
For his part, Kekois Kuyateh, the deputy permanent secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, stressed the need for the project's sustainability after completion. He explained that the project is being established to contribute to the sustainable preservation of the biodiversity of endemic ruminant livestock.
The National Project coordinator of PROGEBE-GAMBIA, Dr Famara Sanyang, gave a brief history of the project, saying, PROGEBE is born from the will of The Gambia, Guinea, Mali and Senegal, to preserve and enhance the productivity of their endemic demographic pressure, drought and also human activity such as deforestation, agriculture, and bushfires among others.
He added that the project is being established by three districts and they are Nianija, Kaing West and Niamina East, and is mainly funded by the African Development Bank (ADB) Global Environment Facility (GEF) and The Gambia Government. Handing over the fire-fighting materials, Hon. Yaya Whan, the National Assembly Member for Nianija, urged the people to properly manage the forest against bushfires, saying that bushfires impact negatively on natural resources.
