Cattle Slaughter Suspension Enrages Butchers
BOTSWANA - No more cattle will be slaughtered at Selebi-Phikwe Council abattoir. The decision by the Town Council has left meat dealers in the mining town up in arms. The Council has decided to close the abattoir after it found that a large number of animals over the last two weeks had being found infected with measles. This has left the treatment facility full and no space for further animals to be accommodated. Butchers are opposed to this decision saying that it will seriously hamper their business operations and affect their profits.
The next closest abattoir is Mmadinare, which is small in capacity and cannot take the majority of business from other butcheries.
The decision to suspend slaughter has restricted the sale of meat in the area, and could result in some businesses struggling to pay financiers, employees wages and meet other expenses.
The Council have said that this decision has been taken to safeguard the consumers.
