USDA Conference to Address Antibiotic Resistance

US - USDA's Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service is teaming up with Ohio State University to host a conference on minimising antibiotic resistance transmission through the food chains.

The conference, with the full title Conference on Food Safety and Public Health Frontier: Minimizing Antibiotic Resistance Transmission through the Food Chain is scheduled for 2 and 3 April 2009 in Washington, DC.

The meeting will provide a multidisciplinary platform for addressing the issue of antibiotic resistance (AR) as it relates to the food chain. Sessions will focus on bacteria that live on humans without hurting or helping them as well as pathogenic bacteria in the evolution, maintenance and transmission of AR. Attendees will discuss risk assessment and AR reduction strategies, future research directions and the development of education and outreach approaches for the industry, regulators, public health authorities and consumers.
