Concern over Cow, Heifer Slaughterings
FRANCE - The Ministry of Agriculture is alarmed at the large numbers of female cattle slaughtered this year that would normally go for breeding. In the first nine months of 2008, 1,077,604 cows were slaughtered and a further 281,088 heifers, reports Farming UK.
This compared with 898,153 steers and young bulls.
The ministry is concerned that cattle numbers are decreasing so fast that beef will soon have to be imported into the country to meet demand.
