Calls Made to Rethink Shannon Flood Basin
IRELAND – Flood basin management of the Shannon river and its tributaries needs rethinking, according to a cattle industry spokesman reacting to recent floods.Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers’ Association Connaught/Ulster vice-president John Flynn has called on authorities to ‘completely reassess’ management of the Shannon while addressing water shortage concerns across the populated east coast and Dublin areas.
Mr Flynn said there are several potential solutions and referenced dredging efforts by the UK Environment Agency.
This potentially alleviates flooding in a number of badly affected areas which incur huge costs, he added.
“Flooding costs landowners, homeowners, businesses and the Government huge amounts of money, as we have seen this year already,” said Mr Flynn.
“We must examine the possibilities in terms of reducing the damage and cost of flooding and revise the management of our flood-prone rivers.”
