URUGUAY – China is the ‘great engine’ which will drive red meat demand, said National Meat Institute (INAC) analyst Paul Caputi earlier this week.

The Asian giant is expected to drive demand, along with the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) in the coming year.

In his summary of the 2014 red meat outlook, INAC's director of information and economic analysis, Mr Caputi explained that Uruguay can capitalise on Chinese demand if domestic consumption stays constant.

He also outlined restructuring in the US as further opportunity to sell more beef.

He added that limitations in Uruguay’s herd size and industrial processing capacity will limit growth.
