The imbalance between high import volumes (mostly increasing from the US) and slow demand in the market kept imported beef stocks at 73,788 tonnes, up 15 per cent from a year ago at the end of May.

While consumption of Japanese domestic beef was somewhat subdued during the month (down 5 per cent year-on-year to 28,840 tonnes), the increase in imports (up 11 per cent) and firm performance of the fast food sector resulted in a surge in consumption of imported beef, up 23 per cent on last year to 37,657 tonnes.

Despite strong consumption in volume terms, Japanese families remain price conscious, adding further pressure to Australian beef exports along with the high valued A$. Household expenditure on food purchases and dining out declined year-on-year in May (Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications), indicating ongoing uncertainties among consumers after the March earthquake.
