Post Drought FMD Vaccinations Begin

06 December 2012

BRAZIL - The annual foot and mouth (FMD) vaccination campaign has reached it second stage after adverse weather required a vaccination period extension in drought affected areas.

Due to the severe drought that affected the Brazilian semiarid states, the immunization period was extended by another 30 days in Maranhao, Rio Grande do Norte, Bahia and municipalities affected by drought in Minas Gerais. The campaign follows the area normally Pantanal of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul until December 15.

Vaccination was performed in most states throughout the month of November. The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA) defined a different vaccination timetable for drought hit states to ensure all producers can vaccinate their animals safely.

Immunization in Paraíba, Piauí, wild lands and backlands of Pernambuco is temporarily suspended. Meaning the second stage of vaccinations is a reduced plan. The official veterinary services of these states will reassess the situation and arrange plans in early January.

The relaxation of the second stage of the campaign is not thought to effect the recognition of these regions as FMD free zones in 2013. The official veterinary services have 30 days after the end of the stage two to log progress. I the first stage of the vaccination process coverage was 97.85 per cent.

Currently the free FMD area that has been vaccinated includes 16 states and the federal district. The campaign and all the work made by the government was critical to guarantee those areas were FMD dree and to avoid FMD within the area. Santa Catarina is not included in the calendar for FMD vaccination because it is an area free of FMD without vaccination.
