Bluetongue Outbreak Spreads Rapidly Through Romania

EUROPE - The bluetongue outbreak has continued to spread through sheep herds in Italy and Bulgaria this week. The disease has now also been detected in eastern Romania where it has spread up from the Bulgarian boarder.

Continuing its spread through Italy, 29 new outbreaks were reported to the OIE on 9 September 2014 as the virus continues to spread on farms throughout the country.

Three hundred and twenty six cases were confirmed in sheep, 10 in goats and 24 in cattle and buffalo.

The affected farms are located in a line from southern to central Italy (pictured).

In Bulgaria, 233 new outbreaks have been reported. Spreading via the midge vector, 2692 new cases have been reported in sheep, 14 in cattle and an unconfirmed number in goats.

The outbreaks were mainly located in the south of the country along the boarder with Greece and Turkey and along a strip running from central to eastern Bulgaria (pictured).

Spreading across northern Bulgaria's boarder, bluetongue is now spreading like wildfire in Romania where a further 85 outbreaks have been reported this week.

In total, there are 87 new cases in sheep, 23 cases in sheep/goats and 77 in cattle. The outbreaks occurred in villages in the east of the country.
