The beef sector saw output rise 3.6 per cent, largely because of an 8 per cent increase in steer throughput.

This is despite reports of lower slaughter figures, down 8.9 per cent between January and June, which the government has attributed to retention rates rising.

Beef volumes reached 49,706 tons which saw a 1.9 per cent jump in exports.

Steer prices have been around 886 peso per head and 509.5 peso for cows.

The government concluded that higher shipments should counter short term surpluses created by the closure of the Guasco plant.
