MLA states that shipments from the US for the month increased 40 per cent year-on-year, to 12,593 tonnes swt, the second highest volumes since the resumption of trade in 2006.

Imports from Australia were down seven per cent year-on-year, to 29,011 tonnes swt, with chilled shipments hit hard by the surging US volumes, contracting by 24 per cent.

MLA states that in the Australian beef export market, while the A$ remained below parity for the week, it failed to provide the much needed kick from Japanese buyers, who reportedly anticipated more favourable pricing from Australian beef exporters. Instead, collective demand from emerging markets kept prices firm, resulting in many Japanese buyers taking up a 'wait-and-see' approach.
