Beef Exports Rise In August
URUGUAY - Uruguayan beef exports for August rose 53 per cent in July and 45 per cent on the same period last year, to 20,294 tonnes swt, bolstered by increased demand from Russia, due to lower Brazilian competition, along with a stabilisation in cattle prices, reports Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA).

MLA states that the rise in shipments for the month occurred despite very tight Uruguayan cattle supplies, with average weekly slaughter levels during August reportedly the lowest for 2011.
Uruguay's exports in August were highlighted by a 78 per cent month-on-month rise in shipments to Russia, to 6,706 tonnes swt.
Meanwhile, exports to South America jumped 125 per cent to 4,843 tonnes swt as Venezuela and Chile ramped up purchases, while exports to the US rose 13 per cent to 1,399 tonnes swt.
However, MLA reports that as a result of 2011's low cattle throughput, total Uruguayan beef exports during the first eight months of 2011 were down 17 per cent on the same period in 2010, to 141,110 tonnes swt.
Average export prices for the same period increased 36 per cent year-on-year, to US$5,870/tonne, slightly higher than the 32 per cent increase in average live steer prices.
Although cattle supplies are not expected to rise significantly during the remainder of 2011, prices will remain at historically high levels, underpinned by strong local consumption and burgeoning export demand.
