Pigs and Cattle in Miyazaki Being Culled

MIYAZAKI, JAPAN - Tens of thousands of pigs and cattle are being culled to contain an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in this southern prefecture of Miyazaki. Officials said that some 77,000 hogs and cattle had been earmarked for destruction.

Officials said that some 77,000 hogs and cattle had been earmarked for destruction.

Farmers in the area are complaining that they do not have enough workers to handle the slaughter or sufficient land to dispose of the carcasses of animals in disease-hit farms.

As of Tuesday, at least 68 instances of suspected infection were reported in Miyazaki Prefecture. About 7 per cent of the area's livestock is to be culled.
