According to a news release by William Hayes of the Argentine BeefPackers S.A., the ban was imposed over incidents of wrong labeling on beef, and suspicions that beef over the age of 20 months were in fact exported.

The incident involved beef tongues in a 6 ton parcel, that had not been stamped by the USDA inspector.

There were 19 tongues that had no stamp, which is negligence on the part of the plant and on the part of the USDA inspector on duty.

The company has similar problems with the health authorities in South Korea, with product from the plant at Greenley, both plants were formally owned by Smithfield Foods and part of the recent US$560 million takeover.
