Slaughter reached 1.266 million head in 2004, when demand for domestic beef increased after US beef import ban in December 2003, before falling 3% in 2005.

Nevertheless, the Japanese trade press Shokuniku Sokuho has forecasted a positive turn in 2007, as more companies have been rebuilding cattle herds to meet demand. The main increase is expected in Wagyu and Wagyu cross cattle.
